Sharon Read
“All great art contains at its center contemplation, a dynamic contemplation.” Susan Sontag 1933 – 2004
There is a stillness when experiencing Sharon’s work; her belief in ‘dynamic contemplation’ describes an almost meditative state, open-mindedness, an awareness of the inner self, and an examination of the emotional response to the work. In other words, what takes you beyond the visual. The layers, cracks, missing fragments, and rough edges all serve to visualise Sharon’s sensitive complexities and emotional processes as she navigates her experiences of the human condition.
Her processes provide a means to wander through her quietness and expression. You may find it necessary to take your time and step inward, allowing your eyes and mind to meander calmly over the terrain, enabling the nuances to reveal themselves: textures, glimpses of a textual narrative, subtle colour changes within an unobtrusive palette of soft ochres, greys, and tones of whiteness.
It could be said that Sharon’s work is an exploration of marks, layers, and textures created with an experimental intent, forming a collection of thought processes and materials, cultivating a cohesive body of work, all of which contain a recognizable and substantial thread that runs throughout her practice.
